Remember you are a human being, not a human doing 🙏🏽
……..
“Some years ago, stuck on a crosstown bus in New York City during rush hour, filled with cold, tired people who were deeply irritated with one another, with the world itself, two men barked at each other about a shove that might or might not have been intentional. A pregnant woman got on, and nobody offered her a seat. Rage was in the air; no mercy would be found here.

But as the bus approached Seventh Avenue, the driver got on the intercom. “Folks,” he said, “I know you have had a rough day and you are frustrated. I can’t do anything about the weather or traffic, but here is what I can do. As each one of you gets off the bus, I will reach out my hand to you. As you walk by, drop your troubles into the palm of my hand, okay? Don’t take your problems home to your families tonight, just leave them with me. My route goes right by the Hudson River, and when I drive by there later, I will open the window and throw your troubles in the water.”

It was as if a spell had lifted. Everyone burst out laughing. People who had been pretending for the past hour not to notice each other’s existence were suddenly grinning at each other like, is this guy serious?

Oh, he was serious.

At the next stop, just as promised, the driver reached out his hand, palm up, and waited. One by one, all the exiting commuters placed their hand just above his and mimed the gesture of dropping something into his palm. Some people laughed as they did this, some teared up but everyone did it.

The driver repeated the same lovely ritual at the next stop, too. And the next. All the way to the river.

We live in a hard world, my friends. Sometimes it is extra difficult to be a human being. Sometimes you have a bad day. Sometimes you have a bad day that lasts for several years. You struggle and fail. You lose jobs, money, friends, faith, and love. You witness horrible events unfolding in the news, and you become fearful and withdrawn. There are times when everything seems cloaked in darkness. You long for the light but don’t know where to find it.

But what if you are the light?

What if you are the very agent of illumination that a dark situation begs for?

That’s what this bus driver taught me, that anyone can be the light, at any moment.

This guy wasn’t some big power player. He wasn’t a spiritual leader.

He wasn’t some media-savvy influencer. He was a bus driver, one of society’s most invisible workers.

But he possessed real power, and he used it beautifully for our benefit.

Of course, I can’t personally end all wars, or solve global warming, or transform vexing people into entirely different creatures.

I definitely can’t control traffic. But I do have some influence on everyone I brush up against, even if we never speak or learn each other’s name.

“No matter who you are, or where you are, or how mundane or tough your situation may seem, I believe you can illuminate your world. In fact, I believe this is the only way the world will ever be illuminated, one bright act of grace at a time, all the way to the river.”

~ Elizabeth Gilbert

I’ve loved sunflowers since my time of holidaying in Umbria in Italy where fields of the golden delights turn to the sun each day.

A while back, I found myself on a panel at the WomenH2h Annual Co-Creation Summit, deep in conversation about “Unlearning Changing/Saving The World.” And it was a mind-blowing discussion.

As we delved into the topic, the conversation took a fascinating turn toward trees—symbols of unity and interconnectedness. Just like in a thriving forest, we realised how individuals, despite being unique, can come together at a root level, creating a network of support and resilience.

But then, like a burst of sunlight breaking through the clouds, the spotlight shifted to sunflowers and I learned something new.

Did you know that even on the darkest of days, sunflowers lean towards each other, sharing their warmth and energy in a beautiful display of camaraderie?

But here’s the fascinating fact I love the most: these vibrant blooms not only share sunshine but also graciously adjust their roots to ensure every plant gets a fair share of nutrients.

Talk about teamwork!

This remarkable revelation struck a chord deep within me. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there’s immense power in uplifting one another and sharing our light with the world.

So, here’s the challenge I present to you. Let’s create ‘sunflower moments’ for those around us every single day.

Start by infusing your interactions with warmth and authenticity. Take a moment to truly connect with your loved ones, listen to their stories, and watch as the bond between you blossoms into something truly extraordinary.

For within these moments of connection lies the power to nurture growth, inspire resilience, and illuminate the world with the brilliance of our shared humanity.

Below are some key components in the world of human connections. The sort of everyday actions that leave you feeling like you can move mountains.

1. Finding Inspiration in Close Connections: Ever wondered what sets your soul on fire? It’s those individuals who light up your world with their passion, creativity, and unwavering determination. Surround yourself with people who inspire you to dream big and chase those dreams with everything you’ve got.

2. Creating a Sense of Belonging: Picture this: you walk into a room filled with your closest friends and loved ones, and suddenly, you feel like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. That’s the power of belonging—the feeling of acceptance, support, and unconditional love that washes over you like a warm embrace.

3. The Power of Accountability: Let’s face it—we all need a gentle push in the right direction from time to time. That’s where accountability comes in. Whether it’s a friend, a mentor, or a trusted confidante, having someone who holds you to your highest self is the secret sauce to personal growth and development.

4. Unwavering Support in Times of Need: Life’s a cosmic carnival, full of highs and lows, so find those to hold your hand through the darkest of nights, and remind you that even in the vast expanse of the universe, you are never alone.

5. The Art of Mutual Growth: They say that true friendship is about reciprocity —a graceful exchange of love, support, and inspiration that lifts both parties higher than they ever thought possible. When you surround yourself with people who challenge you, uplift you, and believe in you, there’s no limit to what you can achieve together.

We are all connected.

Here’s to the dreamers who dare, the believers who inspire, and the friends who make every step of the journey feel like a path worth treading

In a world where everyone’s fighting invisible battles, empathy is the decoder ring. Instead of assuming, why not play detective and uncover the hidden plot playing out in real life?

Empathy isn’t just a skill; it’s the ultimate power-up.

Imagine the scene: you’re in a crowded room, but as a champion of active engagement you drown out the noise. That’s the magic of genuine listening. It’s like turning up the volume on a heartfelt conversation.

But the one’s holding the space need boundaries too. While empathy fuels our mission, setting boundaries is our shield. It’s how we protect our own energy while still holding space for others. It’s the archetypal oxygen mask that you have to put on yourself before saving the day for others.

In a world of selfies and status updates, let’s be the rebels and offer sincere listening and empathy. By acknowledging that everyone has their own storyline, we can in that way become the authors of a more inclusive and understanding world. After all it is what we therapists do and often our clients just need to be heard.

Ultimately kindness and connection steal the show.

How exhausting it is to pretend that our relationships are perfect.

The best part of being human is being able to connect with other humans. We’re hardwired for it. We live in tribes and families, work in groups, love as couples and thrive in friendships.

The drive to connect is in all of us whether we acknowledge it or not. Yet, we’re seeing more loneliness, more depression, more broken relationships, more disconnection.

What’s happening?

In a world where social media often showcases idealized versions of people’s lives and relationships, it can be emotionally draining to maintain the facade of perfection.

We feel pressured to present our connections as faultless, harmonious, and without any bumps along the way. However, this expectation to constantly portray an ideal image can take a toll on our well-being.

The truth is, every relationship has its challenges, disagreements, and moments of imperfection. It is within these struggles that growth and authenticity can emerge. By acknowledging the complexities and vulnerabilities within our relationships, we can create an environment that encourages open communication, understanding, and genuine connection.

Rather than striving for an unattainable ideal, it’s time we encourage open conversations about the complexities of relationships. And create spaces where we can share both the joys and struggles, offering support and understanding to one another. In doing so, we can foster genuine connections that are built on acceptance, vulnerability, and genuine human experiences.

Pretending that our relationships are perfect is an exhausting endeavor that ultimately hinders our well-being and connection with others. It’s time we free ourselves from the shackles of societal expectations and embrace the beauty of imperfect relationships, allowing for growth, understanding, and genuine human connection.

I saw this post some time ago and as many of my clients are reporting that life seems heavy going at present I want to share.

“I asked a friend who has crossed 70 and is heading towards 80 what sort of changes she is feeling in herself”?

Well, here’s what she shared, and trust me, it’s pure gold:

1. After loving my parents, my siblings, my spouse, my children and my friends, I have now started loving myself.

2. I have realised that I am not “Atlas”. The world does not rest on my shoulders.

3. I have stopped bargaining with vegetable & fruit vendors. A few pennies more is not going to break me, but it might help the poor fellow save for his daughter’s school fees.

4. I leave my waitress a big tip. The extra money might bring a smile to her face. She is toiling much harder for a living than I am.

5. I stopped telling the elderly that they’ve already narrated that story many times. The story makes them walk down memory lane & relive their past.

6. I have learned not to correct people even when I know they are wrong. The onus of making everyone perfect is not on me. Peace is more precious than perfection.

7. I give compliments freely and generously. Compliments are a mood enhancer not only for the recipient but also for me. And a small tip for the recipient of a compliment, NEVER turn it down, just say “Thank You.”

Spreading’ those good vibes like wildfire!

Let’s take a leaf out of these words of wisdom and sprinkle a little more love, kindness, and positivity wherever we go. After all, that’s what makes the world a brighter place! ✨

In the words of the Spice Girls breakthrough song ‘Wannabe’, if you ‘Tell me what you want, what you really really want’ then ‘I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want’ in return.

Sadly, in my experience, people mistake what they want for what they really need. Also, when asked ‘What do you want?’ many of my clients will send a long list of what they DON’T want. For example, “I don’t want to feel sad/lonely/self-loathing/lost etc. anymore.”

Do you really know what you need? If you run a business, do you really know your customers and understand what they need?

Henry Ford famously said that if you would have asked people what they wanted (prior to the invention of the motor car) they would have said: ‘A faster horse’.

Success in business really boils down to giving customers what they need. However, the mistake most businesses make is getting caught up in working out how to give customers what they want. Why?

Because it presupposes that they know or can imagine it as with a motor car vs a faster horse.

What I also hear regularly from my coaching and therapy clients is: “I want to feel (happy/loving/excited/real/confident/fulfilled…) again but I just don’t know how.”

Helping them requires that I focus on their needs and get out of the way. It is not about what I happen to think they should or shouldn’t want.

I was reminded of this last week. We have a large hen house and then some turkeys and a pair of cockerels who live in a stable and then roam the paddock. I always think that the latter group have a much better life. They are freer.

So, when one of the turkey-group cockerels died last week (just of old age) we ‘liberated’ one of the ‘captive’ cockerels from the hen run. For two days he wandered back to the hen run trying to find a way back in. Just when I decided I’d grab him and put him back with his old gang he disappeared. Probably dinner for Mr Fox I thought gloomily.

So much for my plan for his better life. He didn’t want it at all. He wanted his flock. He needed to feel safe and secure and in the only environment he has ever known. Lesson learned.

The next time you think about what you want, try shifting your thoughts to what you need now. For example, if you want to feel good about yourself then what do you need to do? Join the gym or join a Park Run for example. If you want to relax then what does your body need? A long bath and an early night perhaps? You get the idea.

Try it and by meeting your needs you will be able to know better what you want for better times ahead.

(P.S happy ending – the cockerel is now back in the hen house with his mates thanks to a neighbour who spotted him in the field and a large fishing net!).

I love to potter around the giant car boot sale that is held in my village each Saturday morning. It is a mix of stalls selling fruit and veg and new items plus an eclectic assortment of goods. I find that increasingly many take me down memory lane. This week, it was a collection of sew-on Brownie Guide badges. I can still remember my uniform, full of the badges I’d earned, and how my late Mum would sew them on with pride.

In my Twinkle Album – from the same time as I was a Brownie – it asks: ‘When I grow up I want to be…….’ I had filled in: ‘An actress and a doctor in my spare time’.

At that age, nothing holds us back. Want to be a spaceship captain? An actress and also a doctor? Why not?

Walt Disney looked across orange groves in LA and saw Disneyland in his imagination. Now within Disney there are people with job titles such as ‘Chief Visioneer’. First, you have to vision it then it becomes real. Rather like that lovely Kevin Costner film ‘Field of Dreams’.

When you are a child, before enough people say: “Don’t be silly, you can’t do that…” you had dreams. The big challenge is that after others stop saying “no” or “don’t be silly” to us, we continue the dialogue with ourselves, every single day. We lower our own expectations and dreams. “Who am I to think I can get that job/partner/lifestyle?” we ask ourselves. Then we procrastinate or don’t go for it as our subconscious keeps us ‘safe’ by not risking it.

The Internal Corrections Officer is a real psychological concept. When you are young, your parents, teachers and other adults take on the role of the ‘corrections officer’, telling you what you can and can’t do. When you are older, you internalise this and in the absence of those adults you take on the role yourself. One of my clients refers to this chorus of disapproval inside her head as ‘The Itty Bitty Shitty Committee’. You wouldn’t want to go there to get support, would you?

Ask yourself today: “What would I dare to dream if nothing is in the way?” As you imagine, be careful to make it a ‘How’ free zone. In business and life, you need those who focus on the ‘how’. It’s important but it can also stifle dreams.

I’m a ‘What’ person asking myself: ‘What if we could’? or ‘What would this look like?’ etc.

Clearly you need help and to take action to make your vision into a reality but for now let’s get back to the question. What would you dream? A different job? House? Lifestyle? Body? Relationship?

Take a moment now. Grab a pen and paper or just close your eyes and visualise. What would you dream if everything were available to you and everything were possible?

Then ask yourself: What made me happy at eight years old? What did I want to be when I grow up?

If you are stuck then Google ‘Kids being asked what they want to be when they grow up’. There are lots of charming videos of young dreamers who are not saying no to themselves.

Often what made us happy as children reveals our true self.

Isn’t it time to tap back into that and dream a little?

Get in touch if you would like to talk about this more – https://rosalynpalmer.com/contact/
