Life often seems like a maze from which we can’t escape, and many of us get stuck by focusing too much on things we can’t change.

This can make us feel powerless and overwhelmed, leading to frustration, disappointment, and even anxiety.

Imagine we’re all sailors on a big ocean. Sometimes, we get caught in strong currents that we can’t control. These currents can be like problems or situations that feel beyond our reach. The more we worry about them, the more we give away our power and let our emotions take over.
It’s the same for swimming in a current.

When I lived on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas we went swimming from a place called The Current. The kids were encouraged to get in and let the current take them as we all knew it ended up safely on a beach about a mile away. Adults would go with them and the rest would wait on the beach to greet them. An important safety lesson.

Here’s the thing: we have a choice. We can go with the flow sometimes, stop resisting what is outside our scope to change and shift our attention to something more within our control.

This is where mindfulness comes in.

Mindfulness means being aware of the present moment. When we’re on “autopilot,” our thoughts and feelings control us. But when we’re mindful, we’re like the captain of our ship. We can notice our thoughts and feelings without letting them control us. We can decide what to influence, what to go with and what to let go.

Imagine you’re making a colourful tapestry. Some threads are things you can control, like your actions, thoughts, and intentions. Other threads are things you can’t control, like the past or what others think. You can weave these threads together to create your own unique design.

Remember, this isn’t a complete list. There are more things you can add on both sides. But it’s a good start. By being mindful and focusing on what you can control, you can empower yourself and feel more in charge of your life.
So, be in the moment. Let your thoughts and feelings pass through you without getting caught up.

Put your energy into what you can control. You are then behind the steering wheel of your own journey.

Toxic leadership can be really tough to deal with, and it can affect us in many ways. But sometimes, while we cannot control the situation- we can definitely learn how to deal with it AND control our reactions to it.

But how do you check if you have a toxic leader in your workplace?

Check in with these feelings:

🚨Stress: Are you in a place where your leader constantly puts you down, criticises your work, or makes you feel like you’re never good enough? This can be incredibly stressful. It will trigger a hormonal reaction where you body will feel tense, and your mind will be on high alert, filled with worries about what might happen next.

🚨Insecurity: Toxic leaders often undermine your self-confidence. They might make you doubt your abilities or even question your worth as a person. This can lead to feelings of insecurity, like you’re not sure if you’re doing things right or if you’re a valuable member of the team.

🚨Emotional Numbness: Dealing with a toxic leader can also make your emotions go into overdrive. You might start to protect yourself by shutting down your feelings because you don’t want to get hurt anymore. This is your subconscious protecting you, like It’s like putting up a wall around your heart. But, while it might protect you from pain, it also keeps you from feeling the good things in life.

As a therapist, I want you to know that it’s okay to feel these things when you’re on the receiving end of toxic leadership.

These feelings show that you’re aware of what’s happening and that at a deep level your subconscious is trying to protect you.

The key is to take care of yourself. You can talk to someone you trust about what you’re going through, like a friend, family member, or a therapist.

They can just hear your out, hold space for you or help you navigate these tough emotions and find ways to cope with them.

You deserve to be in a healthy and supportive environment, and there are people out there who can help you get there. It also starts with you as you are worth it.

So, keep your chin up, and don’t be afraid to seek support when you need it. You’re stronger than you think, and you can overcome the effects of toxic leadership.

In the digital age, virtual recruiting has become the new norm. But have we paused to consider the psychological impact it has on us?

As a therapist working closely with founders and C-suite executives, I’ve observed a significant shift in the emotional landscape of the hiring process.

The convenience of virtual recruiting is undeniable, but it also brings a unique set of challenges.

The lack of face-to-face interaction can lead to feelings of disconnect and uncertainty.

Candidates may struggle to convey their personality and passion through a screen, while recruiters may find it harder to gauge a candidate’s fit for the company culture.

Moreover, the boundary between work and personal life becomes blurred when interviews take place in our living rooms.

This can add an extra layer of stress and anxiety to an already nerve-wracking process.

Remember, every challenge presents an opportunity for growth.

As we navigate this new landscape, strive to bring empathy and understanding into the virtual recruiting process.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about filling a position. It’s about building a community.

Feeling stressed, unsupported, and exhausted? Let’s explore the psychological intricacies of over functioning, as seen through the lens of therapy

🌪️ When anxiety hits, our brains often shift into autopilot mode, seeking the quickest route to soothe ourselves and everyone around us. For many, that swift strategy involves taking on excessive responsibility for family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers. This phenomenon is known as overfunctioning. 🚦

But here’s the catch—overfunctioning for others can be counterproductive, and you may not even realise you’re caught in this cycle. It’s time to break free and nurture your well-being.

Check out my guide below for actionable solutions👇

🔗 Guide to Overcoming Overfunctioning

🦋 There is a poignant story of a man and a butterfly.

He discovered a chrysalis fallen in the road, and out of concern, he brought it home, wanting to protect the emerging butterfly. Yet, as he watched, he noticed a small hole in the chrysalis, and inside, a struggling butterfly. The creature’s efforts were Herculean, but it couldn’t break free. Moments of surrender followed, and the man, worried for the butterfly, intervened with scissors. He thought he was helping, but the butterfly emerged with a swollen body and shrunken wings, unable to fly.

The man failed to recognise that the butterfly’s struggle to break free was a crucial step in strengthening its wings. During this process, fluids transferred to its wings, enabling it to become a fully capable butterfly.

In cutting it free of its chrysalis, compelled to ‘save’ it from its struggle he had infact gone beyond doing it a disservice to actually destroying it 🦋

Does it sound familiar?

Overfunctioning can feel like running on autopilot, assuming excessive responsibility for others, and even trying to save the day. This can lead to a cascade of physical and emotional issues, from overeating to stress-related health problems. Women, in particular due to societal conditioning and expectations, are often expected to overfunction, setting a trap for themselves. Conventional solutions may provide temporary relief, but they rarely address the root cause.

Don’t fall into the hero trap!

Overfunctioners often operate from a place of fear, seeking control, validation, or security. While they may receive praise, this toxic pattern leads to burnout, illness, and breakdowns. They coexist in an emotional ecosystem with underfunctioners.

The key to breaking free from overfunctioning is finding balance before exhaustion sets in and taking responsibility only for what’s truly yours. 🌟

It’s about:

Breaking free from the victim-villain-hero drama triangle

Embracing awareness and accepting what you can’t control

Taking meaningful action

One of the most significant gifts you can offer loved ones is the space to function independently.

#overfunctioning #selflove #selfcare

Inclusivity is in danger of being just a buzzword or box ticking exercise.

It’s time we strip away the fluff and get to the heart of it.

Inclusion isn’t just about sounding good on paper; it’s about creating a workplace where everyone thrives.

Let’s break it down.

Imagine your workplace as a gathering of super beings.

Each person brings their unique superpower to the table. In this extraordinary team, everyone is valued, respected, and celebrated for who they are. Starting with themselves. They know and value their own unique talents.

💯 So, what’s the real deal with inclusivity?

1. Ideas That Spark Magic:
In an inclusive workplace, diverse perspectives fit like puzzle pieces, creating innovations.

2. Joy in the Everyday:
Work should feel like hanging out with friends or at least stimulating peers, not a chore. Inclusivity cultivates an environment where everyone can gain fulfilment.

3. Teamwork Triumphs:
It’s like the perfect sports team—everyone plays their part, and together, achieve greatness.

4. Spreading Goodness: Inclusivity doesn’t stop at the office door. It radiates positivity, making the world a better place for all. We’re not just changing our workplace; we’re changing the world. And it starts within.

But here’s the kicker—real inclusivity isn’t a checkbox exercise. It’s not just about having a diversity policy in your handbook. It’s about taking action, making a difference, and ensuring that every person feels heard, respected, and valued.

Inclusion isn’t a trend; it’s a fundamental pillar of a great workplace.

I believe that together, we can build a workplace where every individual shines and feels good inside; driven by a sense of purpose with collective support.

Inclusivity isn’t just good for business; it’s the heart and soul of a workplace that truly thrives.

#InclusionMatters #RealInclusion

I’ve seen how prioritising work can come at the expense of personal well-being. It’s important to find a balance that includes kindness to oneself and others.

Define what ‘having it all’ or success means to you. It’s not just about financial abundance, but also meaningful relationships, a fulfilling career, good health, personal growth, and having fun.

And feeling good.

Kindness and the act of giving can release feel-good hormones that promote better physical and mental health. Much research shows that engaging in acts of kindness makes you happier.

Kindness is not the same as being nice. While being nice is about being pleasant and agreeable and doing what we think we should, kindness is much more.

I love the idea of being kind and paying it forward.

I first discovered Random Acts of Kindness in the early 1990s when I was attending Tony Robbin’s ‘Unleash The Power Within’ course. At the time social media was in its infancy so we purchased packs of cards that had an angel on the front and then some suggestions for blessing others with random kind acts. Suggestions included paying for the groceries of the next person in a store. Leaving money for 10 coffees for the next people to come into a coffee shop similar random and anonymous kindnesses.

Kind people have worked out that we are all human beings and not human doings and that as we get caught up in the relentless busyness of daily life, we strive to do our best even if this often falls short.

Charles Glassman sums it up nicely and says:“Kindness begins with the understanding that we all struggle.”

Kindness is about authentically being yourself and accepting others for who they are.

It means treating yourself and others with empathy and comprehension in the current moment.

Every one of us has the ability to inspire others to believe in the existence of good-hearted individuals in this world. So start by bringing the positive change you want to see in the business world and beyond; be kind to yourself and others today 🙏🏽

#kindnessmatters #kindness #selfcompassion #compassionateleadership

Are you a glow of good vibes or a storm of negativity?

Positive work vibes aren’t just a luxury; they’re the rocket fuel that propels teams to greatness. So how can you take action to be a positive team player or leader?

Empathy: Tune into the frequencies of your colleagues’ experiences. A sprinkle of understanding can turn a tough day into a triumph.

Collaboration: Break down barriers. Embrace the beauty of diversity.

Support: Offer a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a helping hand. Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness speak the loudest.

Constructive Feedback: Approach discussions with a spirit of growth and improvement. Let’s lift each other up, not tear each other down.

But beware the villains lurking in the shadows: toxic work behaviors.

From office gossip to power plays, these villains threaten to unravel the very fabric of workplace harmony. When I ran my own PR company I had little tolerance for this and found the antidote was to get buy-in to a values contract that became the moral glue that held us together.

How do you contribute to a positive workplace?

In the fast lane of our daily lives, it’s too common to overlook the significance of self-care and kindness towards ourselves. So, hit pause on the hustle for a moment as I onserve something that’s often brushed aside in the pursuit of success: self-care and kindness.

1. Embrace Self-Compassion: “Being kind to yourself starts with self-compassion,” says psychologist Dr. Jane Doe. Instead of being your worst critic, why not be your biggest cheerleader? Treat yourself with the same gentleness and understanding you’d extend to a cherished friend.

Remember, you are deserving of love and kindness, imperfections and all.

2. Prioritise Physical Health: Think of your body as a high-performance machine—it needs the right fuel, regular maintenance, and plenty of rest to keep running smoothly. Your body is your ride-or-die companion on this wild journey called life, so it’s high time you started treating it like the VIP it is.

3. Cultivate a Peaceful Mind: In a world that never sleeps, finding moments of calm can feel like finding a unicorn—elusive and downright magical. But fear not, because tranquility is a deep breath away. Whether it’s through meditation, mindfulness, or simply indulging in a hobby you love, carve out time each day to quiet the chaos and reconnect with yourself.

4. Feed Your Soul: What sets your soul on fire? Whether it’s communing with nature, pursuing creative passions, or lending a helping hand, find activities that nourish your spirit and infuse your life with purpose and fulfillment.

5. Listen to Your Heart: Your heart is more than just a muscle pumping blood through your veins—it’s the compass that guides you towards what truly matters in life. So, listen closely to its whispers, honor its desires, and don’t be afraid to follow where it leads, even if it takes you off the beaten path.

6. Practice Gratitude: They say that gratitude is the secret sauce to a happy life, and I couldn’t agree more. So, before you close your eyes at night, take a moment to reflect on the blessings in your life—the big ones, the small ones, and everything in between. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.

So, there you have it—a roadmap to self-care and kindness that’s as exciting as it is transformative. Remember, this journey of self-kindness is a marathon, not a sprint. Because trust me, the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking.

It is self evident that prioritising the well-being of employees is more important than ever. Beyond physical health, mental well-being has emerged as a crucial element in creating thriving, productive workplaces. Here’s why focusing on mental health can make a significant difference to your company, employees and bottom line

🔍 The Current Mental Health Landscape:

66% of 18 to 24-year-olds report suffering from severe forms of stress around the world. In the UK it is reported that it’s 60% among the same age group [ Mental Health Foundation].

Here are some sobering recent U.S. statistics.

While the percentage of U.S. adults receiving mental health treatment increased from 19.2% in 2019 to 21.6% in 2021, 42% of U.S. adults with a diagnosable condition reported in 2023 that they could not afford to access the treatment they needed and 93.5% of adults with a substance abuse disorder did not receive treatment in the past year (2022).

Working women between 35-44 who are juggling work and motherhood are 50% more likely to suffer stress than men of the same age. [Priory Group].

Sadly, men are much less likely to talk about feelings of stress and even less likely to report work-related stress to a manager (Nick Boettcher et al.)

Having previously spent over 20 years in top London PR and Marcomms agencies, I’ve felt the relentless pressure firsthand. Sleepless nights and reliance on sleeping aids were my norm. My personal story underscores a universal truth: mental health struggles can happen to anyone, anywhere. It’s a stark reminder of why mental health should be a priority.

Practical Steps for Employers:

Normalise Conversations: Encourage open discussions about mental health. Creating a safe space for these conversations can foster a supportive workplace culture.

Prioritise Workplace Support: Implement comprehensive mental health initiatives. Flexible work arrangements, access to counseling, and mental health days can make a significant difference.

Extend Compassion Beyond the Office: Recognise that employees’ struggles don’t end when they leave work. Show empathy and support that reaches into their personal lives.

Promote Holistic Well-Being: Understand the link between mental and physical health. Encourage self-care and provide resources for professional help when needed.

If you’re a leader, it’s time to reflect: Are your employees more than just resources? Do they feel valued and supported? The journey towards a mentally healthy workplace starts with intentional actions and a genuine commitment to well-being.
