The first stage in changing your attitude towards anything and subsequently your behaviour is to understand that nothing in life ever influences humans more than what we link to pain and pleasure.  Moving towards pleasure and away from pain (physical or emotional) is a survival instinct.   This means that we can easily become wired in a way that our brain continues to support even when, years later, our conscious mind is trying to do the opposite.

Hoffmans, Heath Ledgers, Whitney Houstons and Amy Winehouses of our world had everything except a feeling of self worth and without that we have nothing because it all feels so meaningless.

Do you feel that to have ‘everything’ (or even just balance) you will have to make unpleasant compromises?  This yo-yo thinking is the path to pain.  Self talk such as: “I want to be (loved, slim, fit, calm …..) but I just can’t give up my (independence, cake, work…..) is exhausting and no drugs in the world can ever fully fix it.

This is why ‘behavioural’ based solutions such as diets rarely work in the long-term. People can lose weight for that special event (to get into a Wedding Dress for example) but a few years later it has all crept back on again. Then you feel like you have failed. You have not. It is the diet (the new behaviour pattern) that has failed. Your subconscious mind will be working to keep you protected or restore your status quo and only by understanding when and why it decided to act in a certain way and then ‘renegotiating’ with it can you change the behaviour forever.
