In the beautifully chaotic journey we call life, it’s crucial to carve out moments for yourself – moments to fill your own cup, to rejuvenate your spirit.

As a therapist, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of certain practices that, when embraced, can foster a profound sense of well-being. Let’s take a glimpse through the lens of meditation, journaling, rituals, movement, and sleep – practices that can be your compass on the path of self-nurturing.

Meditation: A Sanctuary of Stillness
In the stillness of meditation, you gift yourself the space to breathe and be. As you close your eyes and focus on your breath, you cultivate a connection to the present moment. This practice isn’t about silencing thoughts but observing them with gentle curiosity. It’s a journey inward, where you learn to let go and find a sanctuary within your own being.

Journaling: Conversations with Your True Self
The pages of your journal are like a private dialogue with the most authentic version of yourself. Writing is catharsis; it allows you to pour out your thoughts, emotions, and dreams. Through journaling, you sift through the layers of your mind, unveiling insights that might have been hidden. It’s an act of self-compassion and self-discovery.

Rituals: Intentional Acts of Self-Care
Rituals are the anchors that keep you grounded in self-love. They can be as simple as a morning gratitude practice or as elaborate as creating a peaceful space for tea-time. Rituals infuse life with intention, reminding you to pause, breathe, and be fully present in the moment. They are the whispers of self-compassion woven into the fabric of your day.

Movement: Embracing Your Body’s Wisdom
Movement is a dance with your body’s wisdom. Whether it’s a walk, yoga, or dancing to your favorite song, physical activity is an ode to the vitality coursing through you. Through movement, you reconnect with your body’s rhythm, releasing tension and inviting a sense of aliveness.

Sleep: The Ultimate Act of Self-Care
Sleep is the bridge between yesterday and tomorrow, a sacred space where your body and mind rejuvenate. Prioritizing sleep isn’t just about resting; it’s about honoring your body’s need to heal and recharge. A good night’s sleep sets the stage for a more centered and resilient day.

These practices aren’t a to-do list; they’re invitations to honor yourself. As a therapist, I encourage you to weave these practices into your life with gentleness and grace.

Remember, the journey to well-being is a lifelong one, marked by each intentional step you take. Embrace these practices as tools to embrace your true self, nurture your spirit, and find solace in the art of self-care.

As a therapist, I have had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of empathy in my clients’ lives.

One of the most important lessons I have learned, and one that I believe everyone should embrace, is that it’s not always about you.

In our human interactions, we often forget that people around us may be going through their own struggles, which can significantly impact their behaviour and emotions.

Here’s a question to ask always: ‘What else could this mean?’. What else could be going on for them to show up in this way?

By cultivating empathy and shifting our perspective, we can foster understanding, compassion, and meaningful connections with others.

Recognising the Complexity of Human Experience:
It’s easy to fall into the trap of assuming that others’ actions and behaviours are solely directed towards us. Each person we encounter is shaped by a unique combination of circumstances, upbringing, past traumas, and personal challenges. Their struggles and emotions may have little to do with us, even if it feels that way.

The Power of Empathy:
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. By putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes, we open ourselves up to a world of understanding and connection. When we choose empathy over judgement, we create a safe space for others to express themselves without fear of being misunderstood or dismissed.

Practising Active Listening:
When someone is going through a difficult time, one of the most valuable gifts we can give them is our undivided attention. Practice active listening by focusing on what the person is saying without interrupting or forming immediate judgments. This simple act of genuine listening can make a tremendous difference, showing others that they are seen and heard.

Setting Boundaries:
While empathy is crucial, it’s essential to maintain healthy boundaries. Remember that offering support and understanding doesn’t mean taking on someone else’s emotional burden entirely. It’s okay to prioritise self-care and establish boundaries to protect your mental and emotional well-being.
In a world that often emphasises self-centeredness, embracing empathy can be a transformative act.

By recognising that it’s not always about us and that others may be going through their own difficulties, we can cultivate compassion, understanding, and meaningful connections.

I failed to plan for cancer on my ‘Year Ahead Planner’ 20 years ago.
‌
Hearing that diagnosis freed me to immediately push everything else on my To do list aside. From the get-go I was determined that I would overcome it and also not be defined by it.

So as both a therapist, coach and someone who has navigated several severe illnesses I feel able to offer the advice that you are more than your diagnosis or illness be it physical or mental.

Life often presents us with unexpected challenges that may lead us to believe these trials define our identity. But it’s vital to recognise that you extend far beyond these circumstances.

Some ways to navigate this and own your life again are as follows:

🔥Your Life as a Storybook: Picture your life as a book, where you are the author. Within its pages, there may be chapters detailing setbacks such as health issues, but these challenges do not constitute your entire story.
Your life story is a one-of-a-kind creation, as distinct as your own fingerprint. It encompasses your aspirations, your joys, your passions, and the unique individual you are evolving into.

🔥You Are Not Your Illness: Think of it as having a close friend who occasionally faces tough times but possesses many other remarkable qualities. Your illness is just one aspect of your life, not the whole picture.
Be careful how you speak about your illness. Using “my” to describe your challenges is profoundly impactful.
Consider the difference between “my cancer” and “the cancer.” Possessing these challenges as your own, rather than being possessed by them, is an essential part of reclaiming your sense of power.

🔥Navigating the Tough Chapters: It’s entirely normal if some parts of your life story appear challenging right now. Your narrative is an ongoing journey, and it holds many beautiful chapters that await discovery. It may not seem like it now but trust me it’s true.

🌳Like this poem:

Strong trees do not grow with ease.

The stronger the wind

The stronger the trees

🌳Even in tough times you are laying deep roots to give you more strength to grown into the exceptional person you are and continue to become.

📖 Your story is a testament to your resilience, your dreams, and your indomitable spirit.

Keep going. Keep writing your remarkable story, one chapter at a time.

Do you really give customers what they need?

Henry Ford, famously said that if you would have asked people what they wanted (prior to the motor car) they would have said: ‘A faster horse’.

Success in business really boils down to giving customers what they need. However, the mistake most businesses make is getting caught up in working out how to give customers what they want. Why?

Because it presupposes that they actually know or can imagine it as with a motor car vs a faster horse.

What I hear regularly from my super successful coaching and therapy clients is: “I want to feel (happy/loving/excited/real/confident/fulfilled…) again but I just don’t know how.”

Helping them also requires that I get out of the way. And not free them in a way that I want or think they should want.

I was reminded of this last week. We have a large hen house and then some turkeys and a pair of cockerels who live in a stable and then roam the paddock. I always think that the latter group have a much better life. They are freer.

So when one of the turkey-group cockerels died last week (just of old age) we ‘liberated’ one of the ‘captive’ cockerels from the hen run. For two days he wandered back to the hen run trying to find a way in to his crowd. Just when I decided I’d grab him and put him back he disappeared. Probably dinner for Mr Fox as he wandered off.

So much for my plan for his better life. He didn’t want it at all. He wanted the safety and companionship of his flock. Lesson learned.

Have you learned this in business?

If you want to gain clarity in your business or life I marry a 30-year business pedigree to an award-winning therapy and coaching practice.

(P.S happy ending – the cockerel is back in the hen house with his mates 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓)
