I recently splashed out on a new computer. My old one was seven years old and really showing the strain and as this is an essential piece of business kit for me I dug deep and now a shiny new orange Mac sits on my desk.

The old one was near its memory capacity and kept crashing when I downloaded things.

Every time this happened, I started to think about how we are rather like computers as we can overload when we try to download too much at once.

Did you know that we can be bombarded by over 14,000,000 bits of information at any time?

To cope with this, we have a filter system called the reticular activating system (RAS) that is a collection of nerves in our brainstems.

It is the portal through which nearly all information enters the brain. It filters out unnecessary stuff so that what we need to focus on gets through.

Like all systems designed to help us, it can also have its drawbacks.

This is the reason why when you decide to be different and buy a yellow car and take it out on the road you see yellow cars everywhere.

It’s the reason that an exhausted mother will snap awake when her child starts to whimper, or why you are in a crowd but suddenly very aware that your name has been mentioned across the room.

At a basic level the RAS will respond to your name, anything that is a threat and information that is needed immediately.

However, from our primeval hard-wiring it also responds to novelty and looks for the new.

For example, you enter a room and spot something different or out of place.

Great when you had to notice what was different to survive but not so great when you are trying to relax at home and keep seeing things that need fixing.

My regular mantra to my partner is: ‘Look for what is right and not what is wrong’ as having seen active service he is primed to look out for what is amiss.

The RAS seeks data that validates your beliefs.

So, if you believe that all dogs are vicious you can walk down a road and not see the ten sweet dogs (that don’t correspond to your filter) but your RAS goes on red alert as you pass the one that’s growling. Thus, reinforcing your initial belief.

At its worst prejudice can develop.

People see what they believe and disregard the rest.

Even a heated debate on the radio or television will see people not change their views or let new information into their filter.

As with all things, understanding is power.

So, understand your RAS and reset it for better results.

This is called establishing your intent and it is rather like a goals or resolutions list.

By setting your intention for what you want to filter in, for example, beauty in nature or people doing kind things, your RAS will help you focus on such a way that you meet the people, find the information and become open to the opportunities you desire.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and picked up a very large jar, filled it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They said yes.

He then picked up a box of pebbles, poured them into the jar. He asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

He next picked up and emptied a box of sand into the jar filling up every space. Now is it full? The students responded with a unanimous “yes”.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured them in. “Now,” he said “This jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things. Pay attention to them – your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favourite passions.

The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else – the small stuff. “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you”.

A friend of mine has a business that grew out of a hobby. She offers ‘upcycled’ and ‘repurposed’ items for sale. Lots of Shabby Chic furniture and items that have been made into something different and lovely.

Sadly, recycling your thoughts is not so good.

Upcycle your thoughts

How many times do you get a thought in your head that seems to be stuck on repeat? Usually a negative thought about an event that caused you stress or distress. Racing thoughts may also be worries about things that have not happened yet. Imaginary conversations on repeat or visualisations of conflict situations perhaps? As Mark Twain said: “I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”

Thoughts like these drain your energy, play havoc with your sleep and create stress as they have a physical effect. A thought becomes a feeling that becomes an action.

The trick to breaking this pattern is to move your conscious thoughts away from the pattern they are in. When I’m skiing, I totally forget about everything else. It takes so much concentration to be safe. The more complicated or engaging the task, the better. Going for a walk will not be enough but going for a walk with a pair of binoculars and a ‘Guide to the Birds of the UK’ will be as you will be absorbed and engaged.

What can you do to uplevel your thoughts today?

If you need any help book a discovery call today – https://rosalynpalmer.com/contact/

CANI – I discovered this concept when handling the PR for Tony Robbins and attending his Date With Destiny Course in the mid 90s. It stands for Constant And Never Ending Improvement. It’s about taking small but consistent steps everyday to change your life.

Some days my CANI amounts to little more than the old mantra of ‘Success is largely a case of hanging on when others have let go’. On better days (the majority happily) it is about being flexible and brave enough to refine and uplevel what I do, what I think and how I behave.

At the weekend, I attended a four hour workshop on Your Unique Thought Leadership Message that really drilled down into finding your USP and unique messaging. (Thanks Daria Vodopianova for your knowledge and passion that is tempered with fun and balance🙏🏽).

My intention was to do this to come up with my topic for a killer TEDX talk.

I did and so much more.

It was a challenge on a Saturday afternoon to have to question if what you say about yourself & what you offer clients (and others) is really a reflection of your true values and self today.

Things have to be let go of to create the space to embrace the new.

Watch this space for my uplevelling to thought leadership soon.

This week the value of 80% keeps popping up. According to just a few reports:

· 80% of success comes from your mindset

· 80% of low-income families financially worse off since pandemic

· Covid vaccines cut risk of serious illness by 80% in over 80s

· 80% of sellers on Etsy are women

In both business and life, I adopt the 80/20 rule where possible. Are you aware of it?

It was coined by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who wrote in the late 19th century that in economics, 80% of your results often come from 20% of your efforts. This is still true today. For example, in general, 80% of revenue is generated by 20% of a salesforce and 80% of complaints come from only 20% of customers etc.

It seems that it is a universal truth that only a small percentage of what you do each day or week will produce any sort of measurable result and impact your life at home, at work or even if you are learning a new skill.

The key lesson for making the 80/20 rule work for you is to be mindful always of how and where you spend your time. Invest time now in working out what are your turnkey activities that give you the greatest rewards.

Identify these activities and focus on them rather than waste time and your sanity worrying about time-wasting activities. The great thing about this principle is that, once you’re mindful of it, you can make it part of your daily life.

For example, if you take the time and work out that 80% of your business revenue comes from 20% of your customers then consistently nurture and focus on those customers. In meetings, if 80% of the agreed action points comes from 20% of the meeting then develop ways to have shorter and more outcome focused meetings. When learning a new skill find out what the people who are really good at it do and make that your 80% focus rather than trying to do everything.

By concentrating on the 20% actions that give you 80% of your results, you’ll surpass others who are sweating the small stuff that doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.

On a personal level, 80% of my diet is excellent and the treats and times I just join in with others and have a slice of pizza etc. don’t add up to more than 20% so I don’t feel bad about them and enjoy them instead. In business I strive for excellence and to get through the To Do list of my day but I also have a Stop Doing list that is at least 20% of my time and this gives me time to reset, reflect, read, relax and be a human being and not a human doing.

Also, I don’t beat myself up about everything being 100% perfect.

Like this article for example. I could agonise over it for hours and you would be looking at an empty page. Finished is better than perfect.

Enjoy finding your 80/20 balance today.

As a therapist I find myself saying to clients regularly that, ‘You live what your learn and you learn what you live’. In other words, many of our values, strengths and weaknesses are due to the way we were bought up.

I was a grocer’s daughter. My early years were spent living above the shop in a run-down suburb of Nottingham. The back to back terraces were torn down when I was five but my memory is of an Aladdin’s cave of food and hardware.

Glass apothecary jars filled with sweets and unknowns, huge hams cooked and sold by the slice.

To the locals it was the social services of its day. My parents knew whose husband gambled his wages away. The women, heads down to hide blackened eyes, opened threadbare purses as tears rolled down their cheeks.

I recall looking up at my mother who would raise a finger to her lips to stop me from saying anything, while passing them wax-wrapped packages. I remember the women clutching my mother’s hand and exchanging ‘looks’ but often no money. Compassion in action so not surprising I ended up working for several major charities.

I read no books on leadership or business. I lived it.

Pocket money was earned weighing out 56-pound bags of muddy potatoes into smaller brown paper bags. It was my job was to cut huge blocks of cheese, with a large wire on a marble block, into small predetermined packs. (I hardly ever need to weigh anything as I estimate so well. My mental math is brilliant.) My father would create special offers: buy one, get one free, 10% off… etc. He’d create leaflets run off a Banda machine that I would post through every letterbox in the neighbourhood.

In our living room, we had two huge Indian vases (I still have them in my home today). The vases, cobalt-blue with gold paintings of smoky hills, were always stuffed with money as the banks closed before our shop. Every day I saw the physical reciprocity for hard work but at weekends I would see the toll it took on my father as he often was forced to bed on a Sunday with a migraine. He found it hard to delegate. Early seeds were planted in me to work hard and also to get balance and let go of responsibility to others when you can.

Life-lessons drove me. As early as a 7-year-old, I pushed until I was a Brownie Guide pack leader. At 16, I was chosen as the Girl Guide from Nottingham to meet the Queen.

For me, business was more than a means of making money or a way of feeding my ego. I didn’t really crave success. I wanted to make my parents proud and to honour the service to the community that my grandparents had given. I employed a cleaner who had been in prison and couldn’t find work anywhere else. She was loyal, brave and kind.

Now I help others to live their best lives and guide them to keep the good lessons from their childhood and let the others go.

Which ones will you keep or decide no longer serve you now?
