For me, it was a simple yet powerful statement from my Ayurvedic doctor back 1998: “I don’t know whether to put my money on your physical or nervous breakdown coming first, and both sadden me.”
Back then, I was the quintessential overachiever, wishing fervently for a 26-hour day just to squeeze in more tasks and maybe steal a moment to catch my breath. I tried everything to fend off the looming threat of burnout.
Yet, despite my escape, selling my successful PR agency and large house in London and ‘retiring’ to the Bahamas aged 40, my previous over-extended lifestyle caught up with me. Cancer stuck, as did divorce and more. But through adversity comes growth, and through growth comes wisdom.
