In my practice, I often encounter clients who’ve experienced what’s known as “quiet firing,” and the psychological toll it takes is not to be ignored or underestimated.
Quiet firing occurs when an employer creates a hostile or intolerable work environment with the intention of prompting an employee to resign, rather than officially terminating them.
I have seen people’s mental and physical health suffer with chronic stress manifesting as sleepless nights and digestive issues plus many more detrimental effects.
In plan language, let’s call out quiet firing for that it is. It is akin to a slow and insidious form of workplace bullying. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and feelings of helplessness.
Employees subjected to this often bear a heavy emotional burden. It’s crucial to recognise the signs, seek support, and explore coping strategies. We also need to address the broader issue of workplace culture and ensure that employees are protected from such harmful practices.
Companies that indulge in practices like these deserve to be called out.
A healthy workplace is built on trust, fairness, and ethical behavior.
By addressing and eliminating the practice of quiet firing, you not only protect your employees’ mental health but also uphold the moral integrity and values of your organisation.
and with the build up to Christmas this is more important than ever.
